My interest in language and literacy focuses on the semantic knowledge of emergent readers who speak non-mainstream dialects of American English. Studying emergent readers is important because early detection of reading problems is crucial to aiding children before their difficulties become too severe and even harder to remediate. In addition, children spend much time with their families before they are of age to attend school, and parental literacy skills and dialect variation may have an impact on their children’s dialect use and reading skills.
